Lessons

AJ teaching a studentLessons are typically once a week, however students with large amounts of repertoire may require more than one lesson a week. Students traveling from out of town may choose to have longer lessons every other week. I offer time slots up to 2 hours depending on needs. Beginner students may start at 30 but will move up to 45 within a year. Most students have lessons that are an hour.

Concepts studied include repertoire, theory, technique, practice and performance skills as well as music history to understand music in its context. Advanced students may record lessons if needed to review at home. Parents are encouraged to sit in and be part of their child’s learning experience.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that students with the right motivation and support can become high achievers in anything in life. My goal is to help students grow to their full potential musically and mentally. Through events such as festivals, recitals and competitions students gain experience and confidence in their abilities and themselves. Skills learned by studying music, especially piano, can be transferred to other long-term goals.

While several of my students have moved on to degrees in music, I have also had students accepted to schools such as Harvard, Princeton and Notre Dame because of their high achievements in other areas. Students learn time management, long and short-term goal planning, efficiency and how to be successful under pressure. I feel strongly that students should encourage each other to be the best version of themselves other rather than focus on comparing themselves to others. This idea is reinforced throughout individual lessons and group performance classes.
